The Bishop’s Stortford Museum includes many diverse items, including material relating to Cecil Rhodes and Southern Africa, and also the Bishop’s Stortford Local History Collection. The Bishop’s Stortford Museum is housed within the historic Grade II listed building, Nettleswell House, birthplace of Cecil Rhodes, and includes three floors of material. The Museum was established in 1938, during the same year it received various pieces of furniture, household effects and memorabilia associated with the life and times of Cecil Rhodes. Plans to merge the Rhodes Museum and the Bishop’s Stortford Local History Museum began in 1995. Rhodes Memorial and the Local History Museum merged to become the Bishop’s Stortford Museum and, on 11th November 2005, it was reopened after closure for redevelopment. The Collections are housed together and provide a new focus on the town’s rich local history and unique links with Cecil Rhodes, the Empire and Africa.
