More about

The Fine Art collection held by Heritage Doncaster contains approximately 2,000 items, with the majority of those being works of art on paper. There are around 300 paintings in oil or acrylic in the collection. The first work to enter the collection was purchased by Doncaster Corporation in 1912, and since that time the collection has grown through a mixture of purchases, bequests and donations. Like most museums and galleries in this country, Heritage Doncaster is indebted to the Art Fund and more recently The Heritage Lottery Fund for their assistance with a number of purchases. The Contemporary Art Society also continues to be a generous benefactor. Highlights of the collection include, from the middle of the 18th century, three portraits by Joseph Wright of Derby. From the 19th century a collection of equine portraits by J. F. Herring reflect the importance of horse racing in the history of Doncaster, while a recent purchase, Terence Tenison Cuneo's 'Giants Refreshed: Pacifics in the Doncaster Locomotive Works' provides a powerful reminder to anyone who sees it of the significance of the railways to the social and economic heritage of Doncaster.
