The construction of Castle Cornet commenced in the early thirteenth century. It evolved and grew over the centuries so that it could continue to effectively serve as a defence. Today its purpose is very different, attracting rather than deterring those who visit the island.
The majority of the Castle’s painting collection is located in the Maritime Museum, one of four museums situated within its walls. As the Museum’s name suggests, most of the artworks displayed there have maritime subjects as well as paintings of Castle Cornet from various periods in history.
