Darwin College, University of Cambridge

More about

Darwin College occupies an idyllic site on the River Cam in central Cambridge, and is formed around the nucleus of Newnham Grange, the family home of Charles Darwin's son and grandson. The locale was an inspiration for the artist and writer Gwen Raverat (née Darwin), manifested in words in her memoir 'Period Piece', and frescoes and oils, some of which are in the College's collections. The College displays a fine collection of portraits of the Darwin family from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, as well as those of the Masters of the College since its foundation in 1964. Darwin College was the first graduate-only College in the University of Cambridge and the first College to admit both men and women. Today over 600 students from more than 70 countries study for PhDs and Masters degrees in disciplines ranging from Anglo-Saxon to Zoology, in a multi-disciplinary, informal and egalitarian academic community. It is stressed that the paintings at Darwin College are not in public ownership or on general public display. In accordance with the charitable aims of the College, which is a private institution, the paintings the College holds are included on this website to widen public awareness and for the benefit of scholarship. If you wish visit the College to see a particular painting, please contact the collection in advance.
