Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery was opened in 1964. Designed by the council architects, it replaced the existing Beechfield House Museum which had been home to the collections of Doncaster Museum Service since 1910. The ground floor gallery at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery houses the award-winning 'By River and Road' display which tells the history of Doncaster through displays of social history, archaeology, natural history and decorative arts, taking the visitor on a journey from the Ice Age to the present day. The first floor galleries are devoted to the Fine and Decorative Art collections, while also showing a changing programme of temporary exhibitions.
