Grantham Museum is a local history museum, opened in 1926, which forms part of Lincolnshire County Council Heritage Service. The artworks collected in the Museum’s early days were an eclectic mix with no overriding theme. Recently, however, collecting has been confined to artworks with a local connection. Of particular importance to our collections are those artworks showing local topography, including 'St Wulfram’s Church', 'Mid Lent Fair', and the famous Beehive Inn with its ‘living sign’. The collection also contains paintings by local artists, such as Joe Cross, Alice M. Edwards and Terry Shelbourne. Paintings that feature famous local people are also present, such as Baroness Margaret Thatcher and Sir Isaac Newton, and less well known but locally important people, such as Richard Hornsby Senior and the Middlemore family. The Museum is indebted to the many people who have kindly donated artworks and also to the MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and The Art Fund who have assisted with the purchase of several works.
