By far the largest contributor to Kew’s collections of paintings in oil is Marianne North (1830–1890). She produced nearly 1,000 works in 20 years, travelling across the globe, documenting the flora, fauna and culture that she encountered. She then presented her works to Kew and provided a gallery for their display. Her paintings still hang in this gallery, which was restored to its original character and splendour in 2009.
