The Museum of the Isles is part of the visitor centre at Clan Donald Skye, located within the grounds of Armadale Castle on the Isle of Skye. The Museum, which charts the history of the MacDonalds from medieval times to the present, is home to a small but impressive collection of oil paintings. These focus on the landscapes of the Western Highlands and Islands as well as key figures in its history and culture. Already holding an extensive collection of prints and drawings, the museum began its collection of oil paintings in 1996 with the purchase of 'Bluebells and Wild Garlic, Armadale' by Sherry Palmer. Two years later three more were acquired through the Scottish Art Council Bequest. In 1999, Marsaili Cuninghame, a direct descendant of the 15th chief of the MacDonells of Glengarry, left the Museum four family portraits. The Museum aims to add to the collection where relevant to its collecting policy. This small collection includes paintings by outstanding Scottish artists such as Sir Henry Raeburn and Alexander Moffat as well as a portrait by Angelica Kaufmann.
