North Tyneside General Hospital was officially opened in May 1985 by HRH Princess Alexandra. Prior to the opening, healthcare provision in the area was delivered by seven different hospitals, many of them over 100 years old.
The Portrait of a Man Smoking was originally located in the former Preston Hospital which has since been demolished.
The hospital has developed a Healing Arts programme over the past seven years and today exhibits work by a number of amateur and professional artists on a loan basis.
