Perth Museum & Art Gallery holds one of the oldest public collections in the UK. The collections formed by the Literary & Antiquarian Society of Perth were housed in a building known as the Marshall Monument, which opened in 1824. This structure now forms part of Perth Museum & Art Gallery which opened in its current form in 1935. The fine art collection is displayed in changing exhibitions throughout the year. It includes a small collection of Old Masters reflecting the taste of the local Perthshire aristocracy, plus an impressive body of Scottish art from the nineteenth century to the present day. This includes well-known Scottish masters such as Henry Raeburn, Robert Scott Lauder, William MacTaggart and David Young Cameron. The collection features iconic works such as 'Loch Katrine' by Horatio McCulloch, often associated with the Romantic image of Scotland during the nineteenth century. It also includes three works by Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais including a portrait of his wife, Effie, who originated from Perth. The modern collections include responses to the two major conflicts of the twentieth century as well as key works by Scottish artists such as John Bellany, Joyce Cairns, Joan Eardley and Barbara Rae. The collection and facilities at this location are managed by Culture Perth and Kinross on behalf of Perth & Kinross Council.
