As you walk through the Sedgwick Museum's galleries, you pass through more than 500 million years of the history of life on Earth. The earliest of the four paintings in the Museum is a portrait of John Woodward, a University Benefactor and whose will provided for the first Woodwardian Professor of Geology. It hangs in a small room recreated as Woodward's office. Within the Darwin Exhibition hangs the portrait of Adam Sedgwick by Robert Farren, who joined the Museum in 1840s as Sedgwick’s young assistant. One of the most compelling of the four oil paintings is Farren's 'Life in the Jurassic Sea' which is a copy of the first scientifically based painting of prehistoric life in today's Dorset: it is filled with early reptiles in the sea, on land and in the air. Helen Gilbart's beautiful painting, 'Stardust', was created as part of The Sedgwick Tapes and was commissioned in 2002 during her fine art residency.
